3 Simple Fall Systems to Set Up Before School Starts

Back-to-school season can feel overwhelming before it even begins. The forms, schedules, meals, activities, mornings, and responsibilities can pile up quickly — but we do not have to enter fall in chaos.

In this episode, Rebekah shares three simple systems to set up before school starts so your family can move into the season with more peace, clarity, and harmony.

The three systems are:

  1. Your Calendar System
The goal is not the prettiest planner or the fullest calendar. The goal is simple: everyone knows what is happening. Whether your family uses a paper calendar, a shared digital calendar, or something else entirely, decide where the calendar lives, how it will be updated, and how your family will use it.

Ask yourself:
Where do we look for the calendar?
Is it easy for everyone to reference?
What is happening this week?
What important dates need to be prioritized?
How will we handle changes?

  1. Your Food System
Food takes up so much mental energy, especially during the first few weeks of school. Instead of waiting until you are exhausted on day two, decide ahead of time how food will work.

Ask yourself:
Will we meal plan weekly or monthly?
Who will buy the groceries?
Where will groceries come from?
Who can help cook?
What nights are naturally busy?
What simple meals can we have ready?

Pro tip: prepare 10 freezer meals or easy meals before school starts. Your future self will thank you.

  1. Your Morning System
Great mornings usually begin the night before. This system is about reducing stress, creating clear expectations, and helping your home still feel like a sanctuary even during busy school mornings.

Ask yourself:
What can be prepared the night before?
What time does everyone need to wake up?
What is the breakfast plan?
What is the bathroom routine?
What time do we need to leave?
What one small change would reduce the most stress?

Rebekah also encourages families to schedule a 30–60 minute family meeting in early or mid-August to talk through these systems together. Children often support what they help create, so give them a voice and let them help build the plan.

You do not need a perfect family, color-coded binders, or another planner. You just need a little preparation, intention, and systems that actually work for your unique home.
